Rehabilitation of Schools Affected by the Heavy Rains and Floods

 

BEEJ has intervened in District Gawadar which was badly hit by the flash flooding in February 2005 to carryout rehabilitation of damaged schools.

 

The project duration is six months. Currently two engineers, a social organizer and a site supervisor is carrying out the project activities.

This recent flood had most of its impact in three tehsils  i.e. Dasht, Ormara and Pasni of Gawadar district  causing damage to houses, dam; standing crops,  orchards, livestock, school buildings and water supply  schemes. Affecting an approximate population of  15307  in 40 villages a minimum of 12-15 houses in  each village were completely destroyed while several  other were partially damaged. The torrential rains and  flood have also severely damaged the road network.

Southern parts of the Balochistan province have always been prone to flash floods. Torrential rains in  the first week of February 2005 resulted in causing flash floods in districts of Turbat and Gawadar.  Some 30 people were reported dead while many were reported missing and/or injured. Incident of  breaking of Shadi Kor dam in Pasni Tehsil of Gawadar district also aggravated the situation.

 

In order to assess the ground situation in Gawadar, a joint assessment was undertaken by members  of different INGOs. Assessment team also met with official from different line departments, local  government officials including DCO and District Nazim, local CBO and compiled a report.

 A field team comprising civil engineers, social organizer and a site supervisor is engaged for  implementation of the activity with the full support of BEEJ head office staff. The team will be  stationed  at Gawadar. IUCN, Gawadar office has offered accommodation for the field team.

 

Initially, a detailed damage assessment was carried out to know the situation on ground with the  close coordination of the District Education Department, IUCN Gawadar office and other civil society  organizations working in the area. BEEJ team is directly involved in all the steps and activities of  rehabilitation.
